What are show plates? Can I use them on the road? Are they legal?
The term ‘show plates’ refers to the way that they are designed to be shown off in all sorts of environments, including car shows, bike shows, show rooms, weddings, race days and more. Many people even choose to display their plates on walls in homes or offices. They can also be used for photographic purposes to add an extra touch of class to your vehicle. Show plates also make an excellent gift for car and bike lovers.
It’s possible to customise your show plates in a variety of ways, by choosing different registration layout, borders, fonts, badges, slogans and more. You can let your imagination run wild when it comes to show plates, and you can even use our online number plate maker to get an extra insight into the vast spectrum of styles available to you. All you need to remember is that show number plates are not intended for road use as they are not road legal.
What if I need road legal number plates made online? Can I use your show plates maker?
If you are looking for road legal plates as opposed to show plates, we can also help. Just select the plate type ‘Legal Style’ when using our number plate maker online to remove the show plate options and see the legal options only. The maker will arrange your registration number in a legal format, adding a BS number and our company name, which is a legal requirement.
What if I want bespoke road legal plates? What makes show plates road legal?
It is illegal to have any sort of background behind your registration number. Examples of backgrounds could be images, shapes and patterns. This is to ensure your reg number is clearly visible. If your car, bike or lorry was made prior to January 1973, you can use black number plates with white or silver characters, though modern ABS plates feature black characters on white or yellow reflective film. We do not supply the pre-1973 plates.
Front reg plates on UK vehicles are white, whilst rear ones are yellow. This has remained the case despite changes in the law which allow white lights to feature on the back of vehicles.
The font used for UK plates is the Charles Wright front, which comes in several variations. You can also use borders, badges with text and flags as long as they are added to the left-hand side of your show plates and the flag features above the text.
You can use the following flags:
The Union Jack
The Welsh Dragon
Saint Andrew or Saltire
These forms of text can be included on your badge:
Do you make show plates for specific car manufacturers ?
Yes. We offer show plates for cars that go on various marques such as Ford, BMW, Jaguar, Land Rover and others.
How are my show plates fitted?
We offer a fitting kit during the plate ordering process. This kit enables you to fit the plates to your vehicle. It includes stick-on pads and number plate bolt and screws. Our fitting kits make applying your plates a simple process.
When do Showplate dates change?
Number changes take place twice a year, with different numbers being used to cover the March to August and September to February periods. Though we can not supply you with a private reg number, we can print your plate for you.
