There are many different delivery options available to you when you buy number plates from Show Plates Direct. Our customer network spans the UK and beyond, with more and more international customers coming straight to us when they require bespoke number plates. Our plates are designed to stand up to everything the weather can throw at them and are made from premium grade ABS. We use production techniques of the highest standard when producing your plates to deliver a smooth, outstanding finish. Our plates can last for many years before they need to be replaced despite our highly-competitive prices.
How to design road-legal plates?
Our online plate maker simplifies the process of designing your own bespoke show plates. There are various customisation options to choose from, and you can choose your own border and select from several flags and text options. Once you have finished designing your plates, just confirm your order and we will get on with making them for you. The ordering process is designed to be as simple and stress-free as possible.
What makes plates road-legal?
We are also waiting to hear from you if you need DVLA-compliant replacement plates for your on-road vehicle. Our online plate maker also makes it easy to create compliant plates, and you simply need to select ‘road-legal style’ to remove the show plate options, leaving only the legal options. When you use the online plate maker to design road-legal plates, the maker arranges your registration number in a legal format, adds a BS number and includes the name of our company, which is a legal requirement.
Can I include backgrounds with road-legal plates?
You cannot include any sort of background behind your registration number when creating road-legal plates. This means you won’t be able to add patterns, shapes or images. Your front plate needs to be white and your rear plate yellow. The reason why backgrounds are forbidden is that your number needs to be clearly visible, and backgrounds can compromise visibility. We do not supply pre-1973 plates, but you can add black number plates with white and silver characters if your vehicle was produced before this date. Obviously, this is not the case for the vast majority of vehicles on the road today.
Which font can I use for road-legal number plates?
The font you need to use to make your plates road-legal in the UK is the Charles Wright font. There are numerous variations of this permitted. It is also possible to add certain types of borders, badges with text and flags if they are added to the left side of the plates, with the flag featuring above the text. The flags that you are permitted to use are the Union Jack, Saint George, Welsh Dragon, Saint Andrew or Saltire. You can also include these forms of text on badges: ENG, SCO, WALES, GB, UK and CYM.
Are plates available for specific vehicle manufacturers?
We are able to provide plates for all vehicles and have a great deal of experience when it comes to producing plates for prestigious BMW, Land Rover, Ford and Jaguar models, amongst others. Many motoring enthusiasts come to us when they require new plates for classic cars, with our bespoke plates constantly being seen at trade shows and other special events centred upon iconic vehicles.
How can I fit my number plates?
Rather than pre-drilling holes into your registration plates before we send them out to you, we give you the freedom to fix them in any way you see fit. This is why we strongly recommend that you order a fitting kit with your plates during the ordering process. The fitting kits that we provide come complete with an array of useful items including bolts, screws and stick-on pads.
Can I buy a private registration number from you?
We cannot sell you a private registration number as these are provided by the DVLA. However, we can manufacture your plates and add your private registration to them once you have sourced one from the organisation.
How often do registration numbers change?
There have been considerable changes to the way registration numbers are generated over the years. Currently, number changes for new cars take place twice a year. The year now split into two periods, which are March to August and September to February. The current format includes two letters, 2 year ID numbers and a further three letters.
Facts about number plates
The number plates system is designed to keep roads safe and make sure vehicles can easily be identified after accidents. The registration numbers on number plates link vehicles to a central database which provides information on makes, models and colours as well as their owner’s details such as their names and addresses. Number plates have a pivotal role to play when it comes to helping enforcement agencies including the DVLA and the police to do their job. The plates can be regarded as passports for vehicles. They are also referred to as licence plates and registration plates.
When were number plates first introduced in the UK?
Number plates for vehicles were first introduced to the UK in 1904. The Motor Car Act 1903 requires all vehicles used on public roads to be entered onto the official vehicle register. The vast majority of vehicles in the UK carry rectangular plates, though vehicles like motorcycles have square ones. The Driver and Vehicle Licencing Agency (DVLA) are in charge of administering the number plate system in most parts of Great Britain, with the Driver & Vehicle Agency (DVA) overseeing things in Northern Ireland.
What do customers say about the service they receive from Show Plates Direct?
The reviews and testimonials you can see on our website are 100% genuine. Our customers frequently compliment us on our swift despatch times, the quality of our products, our robust packaging, the simple ordering process, our easy-to-use website and our affordable prices. What’s more is that customers regularly recommend us to their friends, family members and business associates.
Do I need to send any documentation?
Unlike with some registration plate manufacturers and suppliers, you don’t need to send us your V5C documentation or other important paperwork when buying plates from us. This means you don’t need to worry about your documents being lost in the post and can avoid a great deal of stress, saving time and money.
Will I save money by choosing Show Plates Direct?
It’s possible to save a considerable sum when you order your number plates from us. Our relative lack of overheads means we can help you save as much as 50% on what you’ll normally need to pay on the high street. We can also save you a great deal of time – you don’t need to leave the comfort of your own home or get a heap of paperwork together in order for your order to be processed.
Can I add borders to road-legal plates?
Yes, it is possible to add borders to road-legal plates without compromising on compliance. We offer various options related to thickness as well as a number of colours. You can also go borderless if you’d prefer.
Which fonts can be used on road-legal plates?
You can use the Charles Wright font on road-legal plates, in the following variations: Standard, 3D, 3D carbon and 3D Highline. The 3D font is not the illegal gel type raised text. Not only is this option not road-legal, but it can also tend to wear away quickly. For these reasons, we do not offer this option. You will be offered a further 22 font types if you wish to purchase show plates for display purposes rather than road-legal plates.
What exactly does the number plate fitting kit come with?
Your fitting kit will consist of 2 yellow screw caps, 4 coated self-tapping screws, 2 white screw caps, 6 double-sided sticky pads and 2 black screw caps. Once you have finished designing your plates, you will be offered the fitting kit. We strongly recommend that you go ahead and order this to avoid running into problems further down the line. The reason that we do not pre-drill holes into your plates is that the location of the holes can vary considerably from vehicle-to-vehicle. Also, many of our customers prefer to stick their plates on to their cars or other surfaces rather than screw them on.
Can I buy individual plates?
Yes. You can opt for front plates without rear plates and vice versa. You can also buy both at the same time if you wish.
Can I buy bespoke bike plates from Show Plates Direct?
Yes, we offer high-quality plates for motorcycles alongside a wide range of out-sized number plates for all sorts of vehicles.
How many sets of plates can I order at ones?
You can currently order 9/18 plates of the same design. If you need to buy multiple different designs at once, simply order your plates then get in touch with us so we can organise a
discount on postage.
Can I place orders over the telephone?
It is not possible to place an order over the telephone, but there are many good reasons for this. In our experience, errors are far more likely when orders are placed over the phone. What’s more is that the online plate maker gives you a much better insight into what your plates will look like as opposed to a verbal description and offers a host of customisation options that it would not be practical to list or explain over the phone. Keeping orders online-only also allows to minimise our overheads and pass the savings onto you in the form of the most competitive prices on the market. We do ask you to check your order carefully before you confirm it as designs cannot be changed once orders are placed.
I am not in the UK. Can I still buy your number plates?
Our number plates are purchased by customers across the world. We are able to offer affordable prices for international delivery and can ship your plates to a wealth of global locations.
Do you offer Recorded Delivery?
We offer Recorded Delivery as standard for your and our peace of mind. You can also opt for Standard Tracked and Next Day Tracked delivery if you wish.
