I need Road Legal Number Plates made online, how do I do this using your number plate maker?
We’ve made this really easy for you! If you are purchasing a legal style number plate for the road, simply select the plate type ‘Legal Style’ in the number plate maker above, this will remove all the Show Plate options, and leave you with only the Legal options. It will also automatically arrange your Reg Number in the legal format, add a BS number in the bottom corner and include the slogan stating our company name (which is a legal requirement).
So what makes a Number Plate Road Legal? Can my Custom Reg Plates still be legal and look how I want?
Here’s the lowdown on what you need to know…
Backgrounds and Number Plate Colours
Any type of background behind the Reg Number is illegal on the road, this includes Honeycomb, patterns, shapes, images etc. This is to ensure the number plate is clearly visible to law enforcement.
For a car, bike, lorry or van manufactured before January 1973 black number plates with white or silver characters are. This is in contrast to the modern acrylic plates which have black characters on white or yellow reflective film.
These older British black and silver plates made for pre-1973 cars are not produced by Show Plates Direct,
The front plate on a vehicle from the UK is white, the rear is yellow. These colours offer optimal high contrast the black font making it easy to read. The reason for the rear yellow plate harks back from laws which excluded white lights from being permitted on the back of a car, bike, lorry or van – and within this law the reflective surface of the number plate also could not deviate in colour. Although the law has since evolved to allow white lights which are used to illuminate the license plate itself, however the yellow colouring of the reg has been maintained in the law.
Fonts, Borders & Badges
The legal font for UK plates is Charles Wright. There are variations of this font including 3D lettering, and and Hi-line which are also road legal. Borders are also allowed. Badges with flags and text are permitted. These badges must be displayed on the left hand side of the reg plate. The flag must be above the text.
|The following Flag are permitted…
- The Union Jack
- The Welsh Dragon
- Andrew or Saltire
|These text are permitted on the badge…

What dates do number plates change each year?
You may need plates printed for a private registration number (these private numbers can be purchased elsewhere, Show Plates Direct does not provide private registration numbers, however we can have the plate printed for you). If so the following information on number plate date changes may be useful to you.
There are two changes of registration that occur yearly, the reg numbers are made available prior to cars and bikes suitable for the same plates would be made available. The first number change occurs late May this is for cars and bikes that are sold in September. The next number change is in, this is for cars and bikes that are to be sold from March the next year.
